Mākaha Native Shares His Love, Respect For The Ocean

Mākaha native Duane DeSoto grew up in a way that most people only dream of — born into a family whose second home is the beach and whose hearts are filled with love for the ocean.
His mother would take him to the beach constantly throughout the week, where he learned to surf under the patronage of his father and uncles, in particular Bruce DeSoto. He learned a deep appreciation for the ocean over the span of his child- hood.
At age 4, DeSoto was already entered in his first surf competition. Consid- ering the fact that he grew up within a circle of notable water men, this was practi- cally a rite of passage.
