New Boxing Gym Serves Youth At Its ‘Ūke‘e Street Location

Since opening its doors earlier this month, the boxing club has attracted scores of adults and youngsters to its Waipiʻo gym — even though the emphasis has been on teaching the approximately 30 youth as much about be- coming productive members of society as it is with giving them pointers in pugilism.

Longboy would know about wrong directions. As a teenager, he ran into all kinds of trouble before he found discipline and purpose in the Hawaiʻi National Guard’s Youth Challenge program.
In turning his life around, Longboy has become a role model for community youth searching for direction in life.

“I was a delinquent, and I actually dropped out of high school in my sophomore year,” he explains. “Fortu- nately, I had an opportunity to participate in the program, and it saved me.”
“It takes time to build a relationship with these kids, but I always have a little bit of insight for them,” he says. “And, once they become a part of our family, their prob- lems becomes our problems.”
As for the club’s unusu- al name, it’s derived from the street slang “94 block,” which Longboy says is an- other way of saying “you’re from Waipahu.”
