The Hannemanns know a lot more than just how to make a mean burger. The family of nine — well, 38 if you include spouses and children — are the owners and operators of Kahuku-based Seven Broth- ers Burgers, a fresh, nev- er-frozen local burger joint, and have perfected the secret recipe to running a family business.

The eatery, which was originally called Kahuku Grill, was purchased in 2009 by dad Arthur, whose lifelong dream was to open a family restaurant. His vision was to buy one that was already es- tablished to put his seven kids through college, but things turned out just a bit differ- ently than he imagined.
that the one burger we had on the menu was getting more popular. We put our own spin on it ... and instead of having a massive menu with over 40 items, we shrunk the menu down to just a couple of burgers.
hasn’t been times when we absolutely want to kill each other, but it lasts a short pe- riod. We were raised to never hold grudges and to forgive, and it’s been a benefit know- ing we have those traits and characteristics. Going on 14 years, there definitely have been sticky situations, but because we are so close as a family, and because we have such a high level of respect for each other, we’ ve been able to get out of the sticky spots pretty gracefully. “A lot of us dropped out of college to help with the restaurant,” admits co-owner Seek, who’s one of the seven brothers running the biz.
“It was originally just my two little brothers, who were still in high school at the time, helping my mom and dad with the business,” he says. “Then year after year, each one of us jumped on.”
“It could’ ve just been all about burgers, but we made it way more than that,” says Seek. “I think that’s what’s kept us thriving. My dad has always said, ‘We’re not in the burger business, we’ re in the business of changing lives.’ ”
“Back in 2009, (Dad) found this tiny restaurant tucked away behind the lo- cal Kahuku gas station and decided to serve exactly (the same) menu, which was kalbi ribs, teri chicken, a series of different kinds of shrimp — kind of your basic plate lunch items,” he says. “Little by little, we started to realize
Now, nearly 15 years later, all seven brothers are at the helm of the business’s six locations across Hawai‘i and the mainland.
The Hannemanns credit their success to the integra- tion of their family values — which are centered around faith, fresh food and feelings — into the business.
Seven Brothers Burgers recently launched a franchis- ing opportunity and expects its seventh location to open next month in Arizona.
