6 MIDWEEK SEPTEMBER 28, 2022
The Men’s Shed/Community Shed movement started in Australia in the mid-’90s to combat physical and mental health issues caused by loneliness and iso- lation among seniors.
Aloha Community Shed is a 501(c)(3) community workshop, where people, mainly seniors, can tinker, make things and talk sto- ry while improving their health through social interaction and ac- tivity.
ners with local charities, such as the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sun- set, Hawaiian Hope and Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, on projects to serve the community.
A Movement That Battles Isolation And Saves Lives
By Bob Jewell, co-founder and director of Aloha Community Shed
Today, it has grown into more than 3,000 sheds, including more than 20 in the U.S. and around the globe in 14 countries.
We share tools, projects, skills, enthusiasm and friendship by working “shoulder to shoulder with aloha.”
Members completed nine com- munity projects over the past year: building picnic tables for an ele- mentary school for keiki to have classes outside; repairing the roof and building a garden bench at La- nakila Multi-Purpose Senior Cen- ter; and building garden benches for a health care center on the North Shore in conjunction with a Rotary. We have more upcoming projects and activities for members.
The shed movement came to the U.S. in 2016. The Aloha Commu- nity Shed was formed in 2021 by volunteers to encourage healthy physical, social, and mental op- portunities for seniors to share friendships, experiences and proj- ects with pride, dignity and aloha in a welcoming environment for the benefit of our members and the wider community.
Aloha Community Shed receives funding through membership dues, donations, and the sale of craft and donated items.
