MAY 11, 2022 MIDWEEK 17
Vegas is truly becoming the Ninth Is- land with not one, but two May Day events! Both the Henderson and Summerlin communities were treated to the aloha spirit as Summerlin hosted the inaugu- ral Lei Day Parade and Henderson once again was home to the May Day festival.
Where Vegas’ History Comes Alive
Hawai‘i? During an interview with former Las Vegas mayor and former attorney to the “alleged” mob, Oscar Goodman shared this interesting tidbit. As mayor, Goodman spent 12 years working to revitalize the downtown area and was actually succeeded by his wife,
current Mayor Carolyn Goodman, to contin- ue this effort. Thanks to their dedication to the city, locals and visitors now have the Fre- mont East and the Arts districts to enjoy and small-business owners have a place to fulfill their dreams.
In addition to the endless list of entertain- ment, Vegas has several educational, fami- ly-friendly activities. We encourage visitors to add a museum to their travel plans and learn more about the rich history of Vegas. The Mob Museum, the Neon Museum and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum give visitors a glimpse into the evolution of this relatively young city. The Neon Museum re- cently earned the title of Best Pop Culture Museum by USA Today.

While we’re on the topic of The Plaza, ex- pect some exciting renovations happening. The Sand Dollar, a popular off-Strip bar, has just opened a second location inside The Plaza and another evening hot spot is on the way. It also continues to have quite the entertain- ment lineup, including Hawai‘i’s own Augie T, who will be returning to the Ninth Island to perform May 27-29.
Speaking of Vegas history, did you know that the first three individuals who were black- listed from the casinos in Vegas were from
Catch Sebastian and Ninth Island Connection at 7 p.m. Wednesdays on K5 and 2 p.m. Sundays on KGMB.
