Escape rooms are the ultimate brain teaser. You have to look for clues, solve riddles and com- plete objectives before time runs out. Storylines and nar- ratives are aplenty but the goal is the same: escape a space or finish a task. It’s great for the ultra-competitive because there’s relief when you get out in time — even elation if you’re able to beat the current record holder’s time — but also the risk of overwhelming shame if you can’t make it out before the clock strikes 0.

I recently tried a new vir- tual reality escape room at Hawai‘i CinemAttractions in Waikīkī (4dfxhawaii. com). The VR entertain- ment venue partnered with Kaka‘ako-based Chambers Escape Games (chambersha- waii.com) to add exit games to its repertoire of cinema and video arcade offerings.
There are currently three themes to choose from, and we tried Dragon Tower (es- cape from an evil dragon ter- rorizing a medieval town). The other two are just as intriguing and I can’t wait to go back and try those, as well. Space Station Tiberia’s objective is to stop a meteor from destroying Earth, while Depths of Osiris tasks the group with uncovering trea- sure before everyone runs out of oxygen.

I had tried VR before — my first time was at Lost In- side VR in Kaimukī — and it was pretty cool. Couple that with an escape room, and you and your friends are in for a fun time. At Hawai‘i Cine- mAttractions and Chambers Escape Games, the only re- quirement is a good attitude and a height of at least 4 feet. Qualifications in check, my husband, friends and I were ready!
I won’t give away any secrets regarding Dragon Tower — you’ ll have to go try it for yourself — but I will say that it’s quite a bit of work for your body and your brain. Because you’ re ac- tively part of the experience, you’re moving constantly, standing on tiptoes, bending down, reaching for items, etc. I recommend wearing light clothing (I worked up quite the sweat in my cardigan and jeans) and comfortable shoes.
This virtual escape room at Hawai‘i CinemAttractions will have participants moving around quite a bit to unlock secrets, solve puzzles and accomplish tasks. PHOTO COURTESY HAWAI‘I CINEMATTRACTIONS
two: Laserbots or Hospital of Horror. To my chagrin, my friends chose the latter. I kept repeating to myself “remem- ber, this isn’t real” but that didn’t stop me from freaking out. There is great footage of me avoiding creepy crawlies and entities that jump out from behind the shadows — I hope those videos never see the light of day. It goes to show how immersed one can get in these VR worlds.

Loki and Ragnarok, so I thought I’d have a hard time following the storyline and characters. However, Gornichec’s narrative is
compelling and the secondary characters have almost as much depth as main characters Angrboda and Loki. When introduced to a new character, I’d start Googling the mythology and pieces would fall together. I can say that I learned a lot and enjoyed myself with this read.
