Lately, I’ve been sharing a lot of clothes with my mom. But, let me clarify the term “sharing,” as she’s a dedicated front-to-back MidWeek reader, who loves Ron Na- gasawa’s column. (I’m kind of sure she loves my column, too. Or, at least I know she reads it so I have to be truth- ful.)

AUGUST 11, 2021 MIDWEEK 27
 Book Pick Of The Week
Assistance Dogs of Hawai‘i has seen dozens of canines go through its service animal program since its inception in 2000. The Maui-based organization trains dogs who help people with disabilities and special needs, and its executive director and co-founder Maureen “Mo” Maurer published
a book telling the stories of these amazing dogs and the work they do for the people of Hawai‘i. In Wonder Dogs: True Stories of Extraordinary Assistance Dogs (which came out last month), Maurer shares about everything from the
puppies visiting patients in the hospital to the service dogs that help people live their daily lives. And, fun fact, gracing the cover is the nonprofit’s “wonder dog,”Tucker, a golden retriever who served Hawai‘i’s keiki for a decade at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Author J.H. James recently came out with I’m Third
(find it on Amazon), which shares the secrets to success
he’s accumulated during his decadeslong career as a
motivational speaker, personal development coach and a
corporate strategic planning consultant. Chapters focus on
individual themes — like trust, procrastination, leadership,
mental muscle and more — and share quotes from
celebrities, notable professionals and his own experiences
related to the topic. “The premise of the book is that true
success is a product of helping others to succeed,” shares James, who is CEO of local company James Consulting LLC. “My greatest hope for our country today is that we can begin working together in a spirit of harmony and compromise to achieve our mutual goals. In order for that to happen, we will need to reevaluate our thinking and behavioral patterns of the past. Hopefully, I’m Third will open some minds and open some doors that will allow us to achieve the goal of mutual success for ourselves and our country in the future.”
   Mother’s Closet Knows Best
When I say sharing, I mean I find these really retro-looking pieces made with great material — I’m talking 100% breathable polyester — in pops of color and cool patterns that are lacking in my own closet ... and then I borrow (take) them. I’ m unintentionally trying her wardrobe, and I love it.
My mom has given me pairs of her leggings, oversized solid-colored tops, sandals, flats, headbands, hair clips and jewelry, all of which I wear on a regu- lar basis. Furthermore, the tops, jackets and skirts she gets me for special occa- sions quickly become my go-to articles of clothing.
My favorite shirt in recent weeks has been this multicolored flowy top with light blue, teals, yellows, greens and a touch of salmon (see photo). She bought it for herself on a trip to Seat- tle a few years ago, but I’ve worn it more within the past month than she has, well, ever.
I’ m slowly accumulating her closet without even trying, and I couldn’t be happier. I also recognize that I’m fortu- nate to be able to share this experience with my mom, though I can’t say the same for her.
a metaphor, the phrase has become true for me, at least materially.
As a teen, I never would have worn any of these things. When I was young- er, I wasn’t a fan of the clothes that my mom bought for me, either. They were always so old-fashioned and not in style, nothing like what my friends were wear- ing. Now, I can’t get enough of them.
They say we’re destined to become like our parents, and while intended as
So, Mom, since I know you religious- ly read your MidWeek, if you find any of your old oversized denim jackets and patterned button-down short-sleeves, call me. I’ll come over to “try” them on.
