April is Sexual Assault Aware- ness Month and a reminder that sexual violence is widespread and affects us all, whether directly or indirectly. The prevention of sexual violence requires community response and action. For over 40 years, the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children has worked tirelessly to support the emotional healing process of those who experience sexual assault in Hawai‘i, all while increasing community awareness about victims’ needs and reducing the incidence of all forms of sexual vio- lence.

SATC was established in 1976 in response to the community’s concern over the absence of medical, psycho- logical and legal support services for victims. Today, our program provides comprehensive services for survivors of sexual assault through medical care, crisis counseling and therapy. SATC also creates positive change through public policy, awareness and education.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, SATC continues to educate commu- nities to help prevent sexual violence from occurring. In recognition of SAAM, SATC is providing virtual learning opportunities to educate the public about sexual violence strate- gies to keep the community safe, and is working alongside community part- ners to provide weekly webinars and podcasts throughout April.
