March Is Red Cross Month
Nationally — and locally — March is known as Red Cross Month. PHOTOS COURTESY AMERICAN RED CROSS, PACIFIC ISLANDS REGION
COVID-19 Vaccine and Testing
No one wants to think of the what- ifs of disaster: a home fire that destroys your keepsakes, a sud- den evacuation to avoid the perils of a hur- ricane or, perhaps worse, the aftermath of a man-made tragedy. These are not pleas- ant thoughts, but they are the realities that many face. Fortunately, no one must face them alone, and assistance is available from American Red Cross, Pacific Islands Region and our volunteers.
Generous donations from individuals and business partners allow the Red Cross to ensure that survivors don’t have to go without. By donating, you help bring comfort to those in their greatest moment of need.
By Diane Peters-Nguyen, CEO of American Red Cross, Pacific Islands Region
Annually, March is recognized as Red Cross Month for the works of the organi- zation and you are invited to be a part of this legacy.
In 2020, even under the enhanced safety restrictions implemented due to COVID-19, Hawai‘i Red Cross respond- ed to over 30 home fires, multiple civil disturbances, and opened 19 shelters to provide 472 people with refuge when facing Hurricane Douglas. At the heart of these efforts are the dedicated people that so generously give their time. Ap- proximately 2,000 of your neighbors are registered volunteers with the Red Cross. They come from diverse backgrounds, professions and ages and by adding their experiences to relief efforts, Hawai‘i Red Cross continues to reflect the community it serves. Your unique talents and perspec-
tives can contribute, too, by registering as a volunteer.
This year, the monthlong recognition of Red Cross Month is focused on the urgency of need. When tragedy strikes you or your loved ones, help can’t wait, and while the need for basic necessities remains, the resources to provide them may be gone.
Chances are, when you need the Red Cross, it is because you have just expe- rienced an event that was unforeseen, devastating and the need for help is im- mediate. To be a part of Red Cross relief efforts, consider volunteering or making a donation.
