FEBRUARY 17, 2021 MIDWEEK 25
Book Pick Of The Week
I loved The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis. Originally published in 1983, the book is a really beautiful coming-of-age story that
I just couldn’t put down. Recently, everyone has been raving about the Netflix
miniseries of the same name (starring Anya Taylor-Joy
as the main character), and before jumping into the show, I wanted to read the book first.
Going through the novel beforehand is something I try to do with all film adaptations because I like seeing how my
imagination compares with someone else’s version.
Back to the book, though. I know I thoroughly enjoy a book when I finish it
in a day or two, and I completed The Queen’s Gambit in the latter. Fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon is gifted at the game, and despite a rough upbringing, she works hard and climbs the ladder to become an international champion.
The novel deals with childhood trauma, addiction and feminism, and Tevis writes it all splendidly.

We’ll Be Seeing You In Flavor Town
Ask anyone who knows me well, and they’ ll tell you I love food. But it’s not just that I love food.
Here are some of my fa- vorites:
• Peanut butter in my ham- burger
Rather, my taste buds are such that I enjoy snacking on weird combinations — or at least others tell me they’ re weird. It’s perfectly normal to me.
• Going with the cheese theme, cheese and plain oat- meal
• Flamin Hot Cheetos in milk
My family attributes the weird flavor predilections to the years of smoking I did when I was younger (they say it destroyed my sens- es of taste and smell), and maybe that’s somewhat true. But I’ ve always liked eating strange pairings of food.
• Avocado, crushed ice and condensed milk
Peanut butter goes well with just about everything, according to the author, including bananas and bacon, as well as hamburgers.
weird combinations other people eat, and I’ d be game to try it. As always, send me an email. I love hearing from you.
• Slices of cheese on my in- stant ramen. This one seems less strange because, let’s be honest, cheese goes great with everything.
• Sauerkraut on pizza (bo- nus if the pie also has ancho- vies)
• Ranch dressing and rice
I mean, the list goes on, and my co-workers, who proofread this before it went to press, were appalled.
• Shrimp chips dipped in vinegar
When I hear of two seem- ingly dissimilar flavor pro- files, I’ ll usually go out of mywaytotryit.Onmyra- dar now are olive oil on ice cream, pickles with Oreos, and peanut butter with a hot dog.
• Also, oatmeal cookies in vinegar!
• Pepper on apple slices
• Crispy bacon in a peanut butter and banana sandwich
• Strawberry jelly and ketchup on scrambled eggs
• Or, Sriracha in a regular peanut butter sandwich
Now I’m curious what
