        A Micro Brain
fter 25 years of serving the Nagasawa family, our over-the-range microwave gave out. I have fond memories of its service to me, like heating up cold
coffee or the billions of bags of microwave popcorn I’ve consumed.
That’s probably the extent of its use as I can’t ever recall a time where we’ve cooked an entire meal in the microwave. That is unless you consider nachos a meal. Still, it’s a kitchen appliance that we cannot live without.
Growing up in Wahiawā, I remember the day our parents bought our first microwave oven. I felt like we were living in the age of The Jetsons. Goodbye having to wait for Swanson TV dinners to heat up in the conventional oven or for water to boil on the stove.

Of course, microwave popcorn was not yet invented, so it was still foil pan Jiffy Pop on the electric range. I even argued with my sister and brother on who would use it, just to turn the dial and wait to hear the “ding” when it was finished.
Anyway, since the start of 2021, we’ve had a rash of things failing in our house. First, it was our internet router, followed by our main air conditioner. And, for me, the microwave was the last straw. That’s because of all the money we had to spend on these household “necessities” — especially the air condi- tioner, which required that I bring in repair service.

So, I became determined that I was going to change out the microwave myself. Based on experience, my wife was skeptical, yet diplomatic. She urged, “Ron, you work so hard, why don’t you just hire someone to replace it?”
I replied, “Don’t worry honey, I got this!” My first order of business was to remove the old unit. I removed all dishes and cups from the adjoining cabinets along with the cupboard doors. I then took out all the screws I thought were holding the unit in. It didn’t budge. After taking down nearly all the cabinets, I found that the unit was held in by two screws.
It didn’t dawn on me that as I removed the screws, I would have to hold up the microwave. I didn’t count on it weighing as much as 10 bowling balls. When the second screw was out, I was left holding up the microwave with one hand and my drill/driver in the other. I dropped the drill on the stove and then with two hands propped up the unit, which was still tilted on a wall bracket.
I called for my wife, who walked into the kitchen with me frozen in place holding up the microwave standing next to the counters with all the dishes and cupboard doors strewn about.
Calmly, she commented, “How’s that DIY working for you?”
