Surf is above average this month, but as we know there are always exceptions. October’s av- erage might be 3-5-feet, but in 2012 an extra-large north-northwest swell slammed Hawai‘i with 15- 20-foot surf.

North Shore Menehune Contest Takes Center Stage

The officials decide ev- ery morning around 7 a.m. which division will hit the lineup. If there’s bigger surf like we’ ve been having, the
older preteens get out there and test the waters. Some of the really young get pushed into the white water.
This competition has been going strong for 45 years. That means those who joined the Menehune
