r. Jay Kanegawa’s career as a dentist was kismet, to hear him tell it. Hail- ing from a long line of local history-
makers, his great-uncle was not only the first dentist in Wahiawā but also the first from Hawai‘i to graduate from Indiana University School of Dentistry.
His father Gilbert, meanwhile, an alumnus of Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, was ‘Aiea’s premier dentist after setting up shop in 1953.
For his part, Kanegawa has been follow- ing in his father’s footsteps ever since taking over the practice, now dubbed ‘Aiea Family Dental, in the mid-’80s, stepping in fresh out of dental school — also Temple University — after his father became disabled due to a battle with cancer.
There, at the same building his father oc- cupied since 1956, Kanegawa and his staff continue to evaluate, diagnose and treat teeth disorders and diseases.
