ric Welton, president of North Shore Prosthetics and Orthotics at 425 Kamehameha Hwy. in Pearl City,
understands firsthand how life-changing a good prosthetist can be. In 2006, Welton lost his leg in a tragic motorcycle accident and moved to Hawai‘i from California for a life- style change.
While working in construction, his new life in Hawai‘i also inspired him to pick up surfing along with other sports such as hik- ing, freediving, triathlons and yoga. He even became a professional skydiver in 2010. Clearly, he didn’t allow his injury to hold him back.
“My experience as an amputee is what made me want to start NSPO. When I moved to Hawai‘i, I felt like I was very much on my own. There were no support groups, and my prosthetist lived on the mainland. I ended up doing much of the work on my legs by my- self,” Welton says.
