Musical fans will be elated to hear that ‘Ukulele Festival Hawaiʻi is making a return this year in the online sphere. The event will also oper- ate under new organizers as co-founders and ‘Aiea resi- dents Roy and Kathy Sakuma pass the torch to Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel.
“It is truly an honor for us to take on the monumental task of hosting ʻUkulele Fes- tival Hawaiʻi and carrying on Roy and Kathy’s legacy,” state Chee and Maisel. “We are very excited to bring our ideas and experience to or- ganize this year’s festival in a new format that’s both safe and enjoyable for everyone as the world continues on the road to recovery during the pandemic.”
“After celebrating our 50th golden anniversary last year, we both felt it was time for us to take a step back and hand over the reins to someone who can usher the festival into a new era and continue our mis- sion of celebrating the ‘ukule- le with the rest of the world,” state the Sakumas. “We are so grateful to have Craig and Sarah on board, as they bring lots of energy and new ideas to ensure the festival contin- ues to live beyond 50 years.”
Slated for July 18, the events will broadcast on You- Tube Live from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature an array of talents. Though, mini virtual events will take place before the big day, including a local artist showcase in April and a workshop in May.
