Kelly Slater Continues His Run With Another Miracle
This means several crite- ria had to be met. One was size. We had surf anywhere from 6 to 12 feet for the en- tire waiting period of Jan. 29 to Feb 10. A second was direction. We had back-to- back-to-back west north- west swells, which are ide- al for the Banzai reef. The third criteria is the period. Swell thickness was 14-16 seconds, again exactly what Pipe likes. The fourth item is winds. For the most part, we had light trades groom- ing the line up with spar- kling barrels, holding those caverns open so the world’s

old — the youngest ever — even to this day.
The Billabong Pro Pipe- line could not have asked for more. I mean this liter- ally. Pipe was king, produc- ing what many call the best Pipeline event ever.

It’s difficult to express just how astonishing, phe- nomenal and unprecedented his athletic feat was espe- cially at 50. Pipeline is 99% a young man’s/woman’s wave. It is death-defying. Slater won this most pres- tigious event 30 years ago in 1992 when he won his first world title at 20 years
Most surfers of that era finished up their careers before 30. Since Mark Oc- chilupo won his first title at age 30 in 1999 and Sunny Garcia followed up with the same break through in 2000, we sort of broke the 30s decade barrier for pro surfing. I guess some of that quick twitch muscle loses its twitch.
