Two East O‘ahu artists have very different styles. Ellen Dieter’s work with its bright palette and graphic style is both folkloric and whimsical, offering a joyous and un- varnished view of the world around her. Kathy Chang’s paintings reflect life that is full of magic and mystery, often focusing on children with large heads, believing they are a good reminder that it is important to heal the in- ner child.

present related views of life. They are still looking at the human condition.” Schnack has included them along with West O‘ahu artist Tim Nguyen in his latest show, RECENT WORK, opening Friday, Aug. 6.
Dieter says, “For this show, I created a group of paintings that focused on the world within and around me and added an urban feel to the nature. Though my work has a playful side, there is often an underlying story. Because of all the layers I paint, one never knows what lies beneath.”

For Kathy Chang, a Ha- wai‘i Kai resident, the act of creating art is a ritual. She explains, “I approach each piece with an intension that involves, envisioning, re- solving, transforming, and healing/elevating. I start off my paintings with a very

The kids’ creative world seems full of color, dreamlike and playful, but is also a little threatening.”
