National Association for the Advancement of Col- ored People, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Ha- wai‘i Pacific University and many others. A key point expressed in the advocacy letter was the educational value behind recognizing such a monumental day in U.S. History as the offi- cial commemoration of the emancipation of African American slaves, which was recognized by Gov. David Ige on June 19, establishing Hawai‘i as the 49th state to commemorate the official day of remembrance.
ing racial disparities,” Ney- land says. “I am honored to have led our state to the official recognition of June- teenth in Hawai‘i. “We were successful! There is now a commission of 14 youths who work di- rectly with the Honolulu City Council and speak on the everyday issues affect- ing our community. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s lead- ers, which is why it is so important we provide them new and exciting opportuni- ties to learn and grow.”
She explains that the pro- cess started with the crafting of an advocacy letter, which was signed by the majority of Honolulu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i county council members, the Anti-Defa- mation League, American Civil Liberties Union, Dem- ocratic Party of Hawai‘i, Honolulu’s chapter of the
“When I started Hawai‘i for Juneteenth in June of 2020, it was largely about ensuring we as a state were truly exemplifying the ‘aloha spirit’ by standing in solidarity with the Afri- can American community against our country’s grow-
