Back in March, customers who bought a certain amount from Kāhala Mall’s merchants received a limited-edition tote designed by local artist Nick Kuchar. The bag was also filled with gift cards and more goodies.

n the midst of last year’s turbulent times, Kāhala Mall quietly marked half a century of service.
“With everything happening with the glob- al pandemic, we weren’t able to execute our planned event to share this milestone celebra- tion,” says marketing manager Jessi Everett. “On behalf of all of our merchants and every- one at Kāhala Mall, we would like to sincerely thank the community for their support and for being a part of the Kāhala Mall ʻohana for the past 50 years and counting.”
The property’s history actually dates back to 1954, though, when it was called Waiʻalae Shopping Center. Owned by the Bishop Estate, the locale was built to service the residential community after its transformation from a quaint farm town to the charming neighbor- hood it’s known as today. Later, in 1967, two California-based developers, Phillip Lyon and Sheldon Gordon, sought to create Kāhala Cen- ter Co., with plans to renovate the property to be the state’s first enclosed and climate-con- trolled shopping center.
