ounded in 2009 by animal advocate Stephanie Ryan, the O‘ahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to An-
imals in Wahiawā became the first no-kill shelter in Hawai‘i, and it has since rescued and rehabilitated thousands of animals.
Take Buddha. This bulldog was tragical- ly shot in the back. Rushed to the emergen- cy and specialty center at the O‘ahu SPCA, he was evaluated. Unfortunately, signif- icant damage had already been done, and Buddha became permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
After treatment, O‘ahu SPCA was able to find him a caring foster home, recollects director of operations and development Kristen Hudson, and within a few weeks a family permanently adopted him.
“Buddha can now be seen in town rolling around in his wagon or frequenting the lo- cal beaches with his new family,” Hudson shares.
