lthough schools in Hawai‘i have re- turned to in-person learning, many families in the complex district of
Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua found that virtu- al learning worked well for their kids. And, with the current pandemic landscape, there are still parents who prefer distance learning. Thanks to support from the state, Daniel K. Inouye Elementary School — which is lo- cated at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawā — launched the Pineapple Academy in 2021.
The conversation of virtual learning has been taking place at Daniel K. Inouye Ele- mentary for years. Back in 2013, former prin- cipal Jan Iwase obtained a U.S. Department of Defense grant to try hybrid virtual learn- ing. Fourth- and fifth-grade students learned from home throughout the week and came to school two and a half days a week.
Thanks to this foundation already in place, Pineapple Academy wasn’t in uncharted ter- ritory.
