Whoa, May surf kicked off big. It was pretty much unlike any May I can re- member for the past 30 years. We’ve seen times in the past when the North Shore was bigger in May but to have all shores shine so bright all at once was rare. ‘Tis the season to be stoked.

This fifth event on the WCT was the cutoff point midway through the year. It’s a strik- ingly fresh format in which the top third of both men and women are cut from the main championship tour’s five re- maining events. They must go back to the challenger re-qual- ifying series in order to have a chance to surf professionally in 2023. This means only 18 men and 12 women are left to battle it out for finals day in September. It’s career making and breaking stuff.
