Windward Girls Soccer Teams Claim League Honors, Titles

The Kahuku girls soccer duo of Ma’ila and Kamaile Aluli proved a tough pair to contain for their OIA East opponents this winter, and their efforts did not go unnoticed when the league voted recently on OIA’s All-Conference teams.

Both sisters were named to the East’s First Team. Ma’ila is an attacker, while Kamaile was chosen as a mid-fielder. The pair combined to score 17 goals for the Red Raiders, who finished 8-3 overall. A first-round loss to eventual champion Pearl City in the OIA Red post-season tourney ended Kahuku’s chance to move on to the Division I state tournament, but it still closed out the 2013-14 season with work well done.

Kahuku won seven of its first eight games to position itself in the mix for an OIA East crown. Its only two defeats in league play came to Castle and Moanalua.

Attacker Pikake Hix, defender Jaelyn Lowery and goalie Carrie Kamakaala were named to the Second Team from Kahuku. The Red Raiders also had Kiana Schatz, Tiare Pickard and Breeze Rivers-Hurlbut earn Honorable Mentions.

* Castle had two players chosen to the First Team: attacker Vanessa Chinen and defender Kayla Silva-Gage. Chinen tallied a team-high seven goals for the Knights, while Silva-Gage had four.

The Knights won eight of their first 10 games en route to earning a berth in the Division I state tournament. After a first-round loss to eventual state champ Kamehameha-Kapalama, they rebounded for a 3-0 win over Hilo in the consolation bracket. (Castle tied Kaiser in the consolation final.)

Teammates Brandee Lane, Jayli Miyamoto and Destinee Hanaike earned Honorable Mentions.

* Keely York was selected to the Second Team as an attacker for Kalaheo, which claimed the OIA White title. The Mustangs posted six straight wins at one point, including over Radford (1-0) and Leilehua (2-0) in the OIA DII post-season tournament. York, who is a junior, scored five goals for the year. Earning Honorable Mention from Kalaheo were Jennifer Chun, Taylor Catobus, Kamele Kahanu and Mia York.

* Mid-fielder Taylor Strong and defender Kayla Hooker made the Second

Team from Kailua, which finished 6-5 overall this season. Teammates Zsanrei Konohia, Moani Kupahu, Celina Mitchell, Helena Ankien and Kyla Cantillo also were Honorable Mentions.
