West Honolulu Rotary’s David Malo Awards
Rotary Club of West Honolulu conducted its annual David Malo Award ceremony July 18 at the Plaza Club. The David Malo award recognizes a person or persons of Hawaiian ancestry whose accomplishments and life show excellence in fields such as as art, music, dance, education, science, government, religion, business or sports. The award was named after David Malo who exemplified the ideal of high achievement and community service for the betterment of the world around us. This year’s award honored Dennis Kamakahi posthumously. Rev. Kamakahi was an exceptional slack-key guitarist, prolific musical composer, celebrated entertainer and ordained minister. He composed more than 500 Hawaiian songs, won three Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.
