Wailupe School Now A Shelter
After resting vacant for more than two years, the former Wailupe Valley Elementary School at 939 Hind Iuka Drive now serves primarily as a tsunami evacuation and refuge center.
So designated by the city Department of Parks and Recreation, the Wailupe site will be staffed by parks department employees in the event of a tsunami warning. No supplies, however, will be provided.
The Royal Hawaiian Band had expressed interest in using the facility as a rehearsal site, but decided not to use the property. Since the school’s closure, there also have been reports of minor vandalism.
