Local artist Bill Braden, who has a studio on the North Shore, is working with base chaplains to create a six-piece mural on the bare walls of Schofield’s main chapel with the intent of bringing comfort to soldiers and their families. Called the Pacific Peace Project, it has initial funding but needs more. Wahiawa’s William Linehan and Leilehua grad Jaryn Villegas have been admitted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point … Newly minted degree holders: Wahiawa’s Anthony Robinson collected his May 18 from Graceland University in Iowa, Haleiwa’s William Tomlinson graduated May 10 from James Madison University in Virginia; and Wahiawa’s Kelsey Hamaguchi and Mililani’s Mari Anne Lau earned theirs May 23 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. … At its annual Honors Day, Waldorf College in Iowa awarded the Genevieve Stelberg Memorial Scholarship to Mililani’s Mia Crail-Yusif for “personal motivation and character” …
Oregon State’s June 14 commencement featured an expert speaker on stem cell research, with the following area graduates in the audience — Wahiawa’s Tiffany Ruiz, Doctor of Pharmacy; and bachelor’s degrees to Haleiwa’s John Broc, and Mililani’s Briana Artita-Guerrero, Collin Hoy, Melanie Inouye and Lauren Luke magna cum laude … A new state College & Career Readiness Indicator report, by the way, lists Mililani as one of the top five Hawaii public schools for college enrollment rates (71 percent) & & & cchang@midweek.com
