Katie Baird (Kailua 1976) took a sentimental but challenging trip last month back to her three-year Peace Corps assign- ment in the North African country of Mauritania with her teenage son Ben, discovering old friends and plenty of heat, but no electricity, plumbing or running water. When she’s not in her old haunts, Katie and family live in Washington where she’s a UW-Tacoma economics professor. Her mom, Kailua’s Mary Ann Knerr, adds that Katie’s just published Trapped in Mediocrity; Why Our Schools Aren’t World-Class and What We Can Do About It.
