East Oahu businessman, philanthropist and community leader John Henry Felix accepted two more prestigious awards last month from two of his alma maters – the President’s Medal from Menlo College in California, and the announcement that the new dining hall at Harris Manchester College (Oxford, England) will bear his name. Both schools had much praise for John Henry, who has served in so many roles over his long career that an online glance would amaze. As Menlo president James Kelly put it, “It is somewhat overwhelming to learn the profound impact he has made in business, government, labor-management relations, community service, diplomacy and education” …
On another campus, where about 19 percent of students identify themselves as Filipino, Sacred Hearts Academy raised $4,700 in December for its “Wake Up and Help Haiyan” fundraiser. The campaign featured the uniformed girls donating $5 each to dress in pajamas, slippers and wear “Lancers Care” buttons for a day. Junior kindergarten teacher Sandra Arnobit delivered a $4,700 check in person to the Philippine Red Cross in Manila … Waialae-Kahala’s C. Kent Coarsey, a veteran of nonprofit leadership, is the new president and executive director of The Children’s Alliance of Hawaii …
The Kaimuki-based Aloha Harvest charity recently won a $20,000 grant from HECO to help in its mission to feed Oahu’s needy, hungry and homeless. The nonprofit currently brings food (surplus from hotels, restaurants, etc.) to more than 160 agencies, feeding 72,000 people monthly … Kaimuki’s ukulele super-stummer Jake Shimabukuro will play a free show at 3 p.m. Sunday on Waikiki Beach Walk to benefit keiki victims of the 2011 Japan earthquake. The concert is just prior to Honolulu Festival’s grand parade on Kalakaua (833-3378) … Chanel Jamison of Waialae Iki has graduated from Air Force Reserve basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas cchang@midweek.com
