One of Kailua’s many distinguished contributions to music is Randy Wong, now the new executive director of Hawaii Youth Symphony. With a resume two miles long, Randy plays, teaches, directs, manages, produces, composes, arranges, broadcasts, podcasts and plays classical double bass. Castle High … Hawaii’s youngest Poetry Out Loud contestant, Brady Jernigan, is also the state champion, following the March 19 finals. The honor comes with $200 and a free trip to Washington, D.C. to compete nationally. Plus, his homeschool group gets $500 to buy poetry books. Brady lives at Kaneohe marine base, and he’s also busy with Boy Scouts (see story on Page 1) …

Titanic the Musical opened last weekend at Diamond Head Theatre (733-0274), with key Kaneohe talents: John Mount sings the role of Isador Straus, and daughter Megan is musical director (Does she tell Dad what to do?) … UH linguistics graduate student James Grama wants to interview Kaneohe residents native to Hawaii – part of a study on how language changes here.
