UH West Oahu Educators Honored For Excellence In Teaching
Dr. Richard Jones, a UH West Oahu assistant professor of education, and Dr. Stefanie Wilson, a UH West Oahu management professor, recently were recognized for their successes in the classroom.
Jones is the recipient of the 2014 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching, while Wilson was awarded the 2014 Outstanding Teaching with Laulima Innovation Award.
Jones, who teaches science education, loves giving his students hands-on experiences — and continually is working to adapt his lessons and activities to connect with local data and relevant issues.
“I am very humbled to have been selected,” he said.
“UHWO has such great faculty who all work extremely hard to deliver outstanding teaching; to be selected from this excellent group of peers is indeed an honor.”
The Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching honors educators who demonstrate subject mastery and scholarship, and effective and creative teaching methods, along with personal values that benefit the students.
“Dr. Richard Jones is an outstanding educator and does an incredible job teaching his students how to become excellent teachers themselves,” stated UH West Oahu chancellor Rockne Freitas.
“He is passionate about science education,” Freitas added, “and inspires his students with his enthusiasm and effective methods for applying science concepts using real-world, local examples.”
Prior to joining UH West Oahu, he was a high school and middle school science teacher in Montana and a middle school science teacher at Kauai High and Intermediate School.
Jones also is president of Hawaii Science Teachers Association and a University of Hawaii Professional Assembly board member for UH West Oahu.
Wilson was recognized for her work teaching an upper-division online course in strategic management.
The Outstanding Teaching with Laulima Innovation Award recognizes educators who enhance their students’ experiences with the use of technology.
“Dr. Stefanie Wilson is a fine example of the excellent educators we have at UH West Oahu,” said Freitas.
“She constantly strives to offer the highest quality instruction for our students using the latest educational delivery tools that enhance student understanding of management concepts and technology.”
Wilson’s course explored principles and tools for managerial use in the analysis, formulation and implementation of strategy for organizations via advanced technology.
Before joining UH West Oahu in 2006, Wilson worked at Motorola.
In her spare time, she volunteers with the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor.
In addition to her Laulima Innovation Award, Wilson also was the recipient of the University of Hawaii Frances Davis Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching back in 2009.
