What is your official title/occupation? President of Anne Namba Designs, fashion designer
Where and with whom did you see the movie? With my mom, Winifred Namba, at Koko Marina.
Overall, what did you think? I was quite entertained, both visually and with the story. I came in thinking I wouldn’t like it as much, so was pleasantly surprised. I’m not a huge Baz Lurhman fan, as I find some of his movies too weird, but this one appealed to me.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes? The orchid scene. It was so over the top it blew me away.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film? I would give it ★★★.
What did you think of the cinematography? Absolutely beautiful. The opulence, colors, costumes, sets, scenes all added for a visually stunning movie.
Was the message/theme clear? I thought it was clear enough, but of course it’s hard to compare to the book.
Did it remind you of any other work in film? Maybe a bit like Moulin Rouge, mostly because of the cinematography but without the quirky moments that Baz Lurhman often has in his movies.
To whom would you recommend this movie? That’s a tough one, as people I thought would like it didn’t, and people I didn’t think would be interested in seeing it liked it.
Did any of the actors stand out? Nothing I wouldn’t expect of a headliner in a starring role.
Did you identify with any of the characters? Not at all, especially the opulent, impractical, filthy-rich part.
Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film? I really liked the soundtrack. It was current music, but somehow worked with a film that took place in the ’20s.
Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD? Hmm … not sure. Maybe for costume reference and ideas. I would see the movie again, should it be on an airplane or playing on TV, though.
What’s your favorite movie snack? I do like M&M’S, but I’m trying to be good, so I don’t usually eat at movies.
On a different note, what’s new with you? I just did a fashion show with Great Gatsby-inspired looks for Hawaii Theatre, as they are having that theme for their next gala. I showed how accessories, belting and creative combinations can make current clothing look of the ’20s era. I love costumes, so it was right up my alley. I also am going to be doing the costumes for the 2014 productions of The Mikado and Madame Butterfly for Hawaii Opera Theatre.
