Taz’s Quick And Easy Comfort Food
Local boy Taz Vegas of Nanakuli can cook — and he can sing. You might recognize him from the group Typical Hawaiians and, most recently, Kalaeloa.
I had the chance to work with Taz, doing shows on many occasions the past 10 years, and it was only fitting to have him in the kitchen with us. We asked him to make us his favorite meal and go-to dish, and he had the crew and me asking for seconds.
Here is some simple comfort food that will taste even better the next day.
Mahalo, Taz, for the great recipe!
KAI CHOY PORK SOUP
* 6 pounds pork butt, cubed
* 1 round onion, sliced
* 3 cloves garlic, minced
* 1-inch piece ginger, minced (2 tablespoons)
* 1 teaspoon black pepper
* 1/2 cup patis
* 2-3 pounds kai choy
Cut pork into 1-inch cubes; brown with oil, garlic and ginger.
Add onion, salt and pepper, cover meat with water and cook for 30 minutes. Add patis and kai choy.
