Talented Kailua Athlete Lee Narrows It Down To Basketball
With a year already under her belt on varsity, Kailua resident Lindsey Lee is ahead of the game with three years of prep basketball eligibility remaining.
The Maryknoll sophomore-to-be played in every game for the Spartans last winter despite being one of only two first-year players on the team. Her progress on the hardwood has been helped by upping her commitment to basketball after dividing her time among many sports. “I played soccer, volleyball and flag football for a year,” said Lee. “Two years ago, I had to pick (only) one because soccer and basketball are played during the same season. I thought I could excel more in basketball. I really love the sport.”
Last week, she played in Big Foot Hoops Las Vegas Classic on Chico Furtado’s Hawaii-Select traveling All-Star Team. She recently took time away from practice to visit with MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.
What is your earliest sports memory? When I was 8 and playing in Kailua Basketball Association. I was coached by my uncle and my dad, and I had my brother and my cousins on the team. I remember it was fun playing with my family and my friends. Having them there with me was a joy.
Who has had the biggest impact on your life? My parents (Dean and Elizabeth). They’re always pushing me to do my best, always there for me, and they support me in everything.
What’s been the best part of playing for the Hawaii-Select All-Star Team? Traveling with my team and getting to know people from different schools. We want to go up there and show people what we’ve learned and what Coach Chico has taught us.
What area of your game are you focusing on most this summer? I’m trying to focus more on becoming a better 3-point shooter. It’s something I’ve talked about with Coach Chico. I want to be a better player for myself and for my team.
Who plays the toughest defense among your team-mates in practice? Cianna Ochoco. She’s always on her toes. She’s quick, she can recover, and she has great instincts. She talks a lot and is able to lift everyone up with her defense.
What website do you go to the most? I mostly Google things. When I want to know something, I go there.
What film could you watch over and over? The Bourne Legacy series.
What item could you not live without? My phone.
Who are three of your favorite musical artists? Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood, and I’ve been listening to a lot of Usher lately.
When you have free time, how do you like to spend it? Mostly, I’m playing basketball or relaxing. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of books. I also like to hang out with my family a lot.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope that I have a pretty stable job and that I’m pursuing something I love. I’m looking at a job in sports medicine right now. I also hope I’m still close to my family and that I’m making them proud in whatever I’m doing.
If you were planning a trip, what would be your ‘dream’ destination? One would be to take a trip across America to see historical places.
You’re stuck on Kahoolawe and can have only one food. What would it be? Pasta.
Given the chance, what celebrity would you most like to meet? Magic Johnson. jackster.1969@ yahoo.com
