Surfrider Kanoho Is On The Ball — Four Kinds, All Year Long

Peter Kanoho didn’t have to wait until college to learn time-management skills. The Kailua High senior has been in a balancing act since November, when he played basketball and soccer at the same time.
This spring, he’s dividing his time between the volleyball court and the baseball field, where he is the lead-off hitter and an outfielder. Last Wednesday, Kanoho actually had a game for each team on the same day. The Surfriders’ baseball team played Roosevelt in a key game that began at 3:30. He left before it ended to race over to Farrington High School, where his volleyball team-mates were playing in the OIA tournament.
“It’s just been a long road,” admitted Kanoho, who was born deaf and wears hearing aids, “but it is my senior year, and that gives me an extra push. You’re only in high school once. I’ve already started to miss it. God has blessed me with all of these opportunities.”
Kanoho recently took some time away from juggling sports to visit with MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.
What is your earliest sports-related memory? When I was young and my dad (Alfred) was coaching me in every sport. I’d go from basketball to baseball to soccer. It made us really close. He’s like my sports mentor.
Who’s had the biggest impact on your life? My sister (former Kailua High soccer standout Ashley Kanoho) because of our sibling rivalry. Her being so good at soccer made me want to be good. She was such a perfect soccer player. I was always in her shadow. She gave me the inspiration to play more sports.
What was your area of focus over the summer months? Basketball. It was my first time playing basketball in four years, and I was out of the groove.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned through athletics? Mostly teamwork and making friends through sports.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope to still be playing sports. I would really like to play professionally, even if it’s Triple A (baseball) or something. Wherever God takes me, I’m going to accept it.
What Internet site do you frequent the most? Instagram.
What is your least favorite household chore? Taking out the trash would be one. I’m kind of germaphobic. I have to keep my hands clean.
What movie could you watch over and over? The Disney movie Frozen.
Who are three of your favorite musical artists? The Katinas, Calvin Harris and John Mayer.
When you have free time, how do you like to spend it? I like to play the drums, go hiking and go to the beach to go surfing and body surf, as well as hang out with my family.
You’re stuck on Kahoolawe and can have an endless supply of just one food. What would it be? I can’t live without salmon.
If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you most like to meet? (Pro baseball player) Derek Jeter.
