Step Up Revolution

Stephanie Nix-Robello
Dance Director for NIX Performing Arts Center

Where and with whom did you see the movie?

Pearlridge Mall with (my husband) Travis Nix-Robello.

Overall, what did you think?

I enjoyed the dance dynamic and choreography. There was a lot more dancing than I anticipated, which was amazing! Special effects for each of the flash mob moments were incredible and really inspired me as a choreographer. I loved how this movie really incorporated all the elements of dance.

Acting wasn’t obviously impressive, nor was the plot. I understood how the story shows us the struggles of dancers out there in the real world, in which all people need to really understand that it is a tough world to break into or make it.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?

My favorite scene was definitely when actress/dancer Kathryn McCormick was doing a contemporary freestyle. This really reminded me of when I used to really use dance as a form of expression. She was frustrated with her father not supporting her dreams as a dancer, and so she used music, movement and technique to let go of all her worries and frustrations.

"Step Up Revolution"

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

★★★

What did you think of the cinematography?

Of course! Who doesn’t remember Twitch, Travis Wall and all the amazing dancers who branched out from doing SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance)? It was great that they also brought some of the actors from the previous

Step Up movies.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?

What is dance without music? It definitely had a strong contribution to making each of the flash mob chore-ographies stand out.

Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?

Yes. My daughters love dance, and I would like to show them how the dance world took the globe by storm.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

Red Vines.

On a different note, what’s new with you?

I am currently a dancer in a new show at the Royal Hawaiian Theatre in Waikiki called Legends In Concert. It is the world’s No. 1 tribute artist show. Also, you can catch me on KHON2 News Wake Up 2Day with Olena Heu to recap SYTYCD episodes starting Aug. 16 and every other Thursday until the season finale.
