Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I went to Consolidated Theatres at Ward Center with my wife Tami Daquioag.
Overall, what did you think?
Overall, I enjoyed it because it was funny and pleasant, with some added drama about a boy’s bond with a grumpy old man with bad behavior.
It stars Bill Murray as Vincent MacKenna baby-sitting a smart 12-year-old boy Jaeden Lieberher as Oliver. It is not top-quality filmmaking, but if you are a diehard Bill Murray fan, you should see this movie.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
After the end of the movie during the credits, Vincent was watering the backyard of his house with no grass and dying plants and singing along to Bob Dylan’s song Shelter from the Storm.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
★★★.
What did you think of the cinematography?
Not much for scenery. It was filmed mostly in Vincent’s hometown and his messy house. The filming was based mostly on visual comedy/storytelling techniques.
Was the message/theme clear?
Yes, it is very clear and somewhat predictable.
Vincent’s bad behavior and Oliver’s innocence at the end form a meaningful bond with one another.
There are other movies from the past that are similar to it. But Bill Murray’s great performance helps to keep this movie alive.
Did it remind you of any other movie or film?
At first, it resembles the movie Bad Santa, starring Billy Bob Thornton cast as old actor who portrays a bad-mannered person, and a very smart little boy.
Who would you recommend this movie to?
I would recommend it for more mature audiences because it is rated PG-13.
There are some scenes that may not be appropriate for young children because of sexual content, alcohol and tobacco use and language.
Did any of the actors stand out?
Obviously, yes. This is a Bill Murray movie.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
Yes, it shows how a saint can be like you and me, depending on how you define a saint. In one particular scene,
Oliver was doing a class project about saints at his Catholic school.
Vincent is no saint, but God wants us to be good, so I guess he wants everybody to be a saint.
Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?
There were songs in several scenes that contributed to the film, especially when Vincent was listening and singing along on his portable cassette player to a song by Bob Dylan at the end of the movie. There is a soundtrack album from the movie.
Would you buy this movie when it comes out on DVD?
No, I would rent it. I like to watch Bill Murray.
What is your favorite movie snack?
Popcorn with mochi crunch and Coke Icee.
