Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I went to this film all by myself. Time did not allow for my family to come with me. But I will be taking my kids to see the movie while it is in the theater!
Overall, what did you think?
I thought the film was exceptionally entertaining. The comedy is broad, the adventure exciting and the characters felt like old friends. I loved the first SpongeBob SquarePants movie immensely. This movie is a very worthy sequel to the brilliant original.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
There is a scene in the film where two old enemies have to work together for a common goal. SpongeBob and Plankton always have been each other’s worst enemies. The characters could not be more opposite. With only each other to rely on, they have to save the day. In their effort to figure out how to work together, they end up creating a hilarious musical number. There’s also an incredible cameo later in the film.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
I would easily rate this film ★★★★!
What did you think of the cinematography?
The film is mostly animated. There are some live action and CG combined with live-action shots, which are fun, but the old-style cell animation is the most fun to look at. It provides a very comfortable nostalgic feel for the SpongeBob SquarePants show we all love.
Was the message/theme clear?
There is a major theme of friendship and teamwork that permeates the film. The movie made me want to go find my archnemesis and go solve the world’s problems together! SpongeBob always has had a message of “never be afraid to be yourself.”
Who would you recommend this movie to?
I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. Kids will love the wacky hijinks of SpongeBob and crew. Adults will love the very witty dialogue and historical references. The themes of friendship and teamwork while overcoming diversity should connect to everyone.
Did any of the actors stand out?
The voice actor named Mr. Lawrence plays the antagonistic Plankton. He always has given the character bravado and wit that is genius and hilarious. Antonio Banderas also is great as a greedy Burger Beard.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
I feel very connected to Plankton. He is just trying to make his restaurant business successful, and his efforts are always thwarted by that do-gooding SpongeBob. I think Plankton is that tiny bit of villain in all of us. We’re all just always looking for ways to get ahead in life without having to deal with all those idiots who surround us.
Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?
The movie does a wonderful job teasing us with the SpongeBob theme. Will they play it, or won’t they? The payoff is very satisfying. There also is a brand-new song that is sure to demand a sing-along version!

I am fortunate enough to keep myself busy as captain of Treasure Seeker for Hawaii Pirate Ship Adventures! My zany crew and I have a grand time training all who board our vessel to be proper pirates of the glorious seas of Waikiki. You can find the Treasure Seeker in Kewalo Basin harbor, right across from Ward Warehouse. We have daily treasure-seeking adventures for the whole family, and Friday and Saturday Dancing Cruises for the adults.
