Snow White and the Huntsman
Stacey Snee
Mrs. Hawaii 2012
Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I saw it at Consolidated Theatres Pearlridge 16 at Pearlridge Mall with my husband Dave.
Overall what did you think?
Overall I thought this was a very entertaining film and a good, but very loose adaptation of a classic children’s story into a modern film.
I tend to like comedies, so I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie.
Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?
One of my favorite scenes was when the characters portrayed as the seven “dwarfs” were introduced because it brought some humor to the film while also tying it to the classic fairy tale.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
I would give the film ★★★ 1/2 stars … an entertaining and a well-made movie, but it still falls short of one of my all-time favorites.
What did you think of the cinematography?
The cinematography was very well done. The landscapes, action scenes, and portrayal of both magical and mysterious places made you feel like this fantasyland really could exist.
Was the message/theme clear?
The basic theme of good versus evil was definitely clear throughout the film. However, there were many smaller messages/themes that were either poorly explained or not well-developed as the movie played out.
Did it remind you of any other work in film?
The cinematography and some of the dry humor of the “dwarf” characters were similar to Lord of the Rings while the battle scenes were reminiscent of those in movies like 300 and Braveheart.
To whom would you recommend this movie?
I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good action/thriller with a touch of fantasy.
Those with a basic understanding of the classic fairy tale of Snow White will enjoy the differences and parallels to this movie.
Did any of the actors stand out?
Yes, several of the actors stood out in this movie. I was impressed by the darkness, evil and intensity that Charlize Theron portrayed as the Dark Queen, as well as the depth and tenacity from Kristen Stewart as Snow White.
Chris Hemsworth also was a standout as the rugged but brave Huntsman.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
I could identify with certain aspects of the characters, but not completely identify with any one character because they were all so extreme.
For example, Kristen Stewart, who acted the role of Snow White, was this beautiful, pure and somewhat magical person with a tough, passionate and persevering fighter’s spirit. I can identify most with the passionate and persevering part of her character.
On a different note, what’s new with you?
I am busy preparing to represent Hawaii at the national Mrs. America pageant, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 23 to 29 in Tucson, Ariz.
I’ve also been working to promote healthy families and prevention of childhood obesity through recent 5K and keiki events, blogs, and the Hawaii Initiative on Childhood Obesity Research and Education’s (HICORE) 5210 Let’s Go! program.
I’m hoping to support other events/programs in the state aimed at healthy lifestyles. To follow my activities in the community and bid for Mrs. America, go to facebook.com/mrshawaii2012.
