‘Shimabukuro’ Film, Talk Set At UH-WO
University of Hawaii – West Oahu hosts a film screening of the award-winning documentary Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today (March 19) in building D237.
Director Tadashi Nakamura also will attend the screening and lead a discussion about filmmaking, art and activism.
The film, which won the 2013 Hawaii International Film Festival Audience Award and the Gotham Film Audience Award, profiles Shimabukuro and examines the influences that have shaped him.
The film takes viewers on the road with Shimabukuro, following him on tour from Los Angeles to New York to Japan.
Nakamura’s film resume also includes a documentary trilogy on the Japanese-American experience, Yellow Brotherhood (2003), Pilgrimage (2007), and A Song for Ourselves (2009). The trilogy has won more than 20 awards at various festivals.
