Friends Jasmine Slovak and Kerrie Inouye recently have launched Salt + Sand, a styling service brought directly to the customer in-home, online and through pop-up shops.

“Rather than create a typical retail experience, we wanted a more personalized shopping experience that much of modern retail is losing,” they noted. “We want to leverage all the technology we have at our fingertips to make an accessible styling experience.”

They offer contemporary and classic designs from local designers, as well as from L.A. and New York. All items are personally chosen by Slovak and Inouye, with versatility, quality and functionality always kept in mind. Among the brands they carry are Matt Bruening, B.D’Angelo, Katrina Cordova, The Lady & The Sailor, David Lerner and Stateside.

Slovak and Inouye, who both have worked in the fashion industry for many years, became fast friends over a mutual fanaticism of a Marc Jacobs bag and mutual interest in a runway show called Fashion Trance. When they were just 18, they both worked as buyers for a small boutique in Honolulu called Koko Cabana before Jasmine went on to study abroad in Paris and work the fashion loop in San Francisco, while Inouye became a mother of two sons (6-year-old Hayzen and 2-year-old Madden) and worked for local designer Fighting Eel.

“Salt + Sand was a name that was pulled from what inspired us the most about starting a business together,” says Inouye. “We’re long-time friends, and between our shared view of the importance of our relationships with our clients and with one another, we wanted Salt + Sand to be a company that celebrates the woman and her tribe. Women are the salt of the earth, and it takes their sand and courage to make a good life for all of those around them.”

Check out Salt + Sand at R&D (691 Auahi St.) Dec. 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and at A Pinch of Salt Warehouse (683 Auahi St.) Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also will be featured at Honolulu Night Market’s fashion show Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. in Kakaako.
