Sabers’ First Walk/Run Raises Breast Cancer Awareness
Take a walk or run around Campbell High School Oct. 19 and you’ll be helping to raise awareness about breast cancer during the Sabers Walk/Run for the Cure, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a brief warmup at 8.
Thought up by Campbell High’s PTSA, the event is the first of its kind for the school.
“Many families are affected by someone who has breast cancer,” explained Quiana Harrison, PTSA president and mother of two Campbell students.
“Many people find out when it’s too late.”
In talking with members of the community, Harrison realized that many people are not familiar with the early signs of breast cancer.
“(Our) goal is to bring awareness to the Ewa Beach community to have yearly exams,” she added. “The earlier the detection, the better your chances are.”
In addition to the run/walk, the event also will feature a community fair with food booths and other vendors with activities such as face painting.
Entry fee is $20 (until Oct. 10, includes Sabers Walk for the Cure T-shirt) or $25 (after Oct. 10). Funds raised will benefit Campbell PTSA’s programs.
A portion of the proceeds also will be donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation to help research a cure for breast cancer.
