Roof Work Will Close Kailua Library Oct. 22
Kailua Library will close Oct. 22 for major roof work, and may not reopen until “early winter.”
“We’re getting a new roof, but because it’s the rainy season, we’re not sure about the reopening date,” said library manager Patti Meerians. “We’re praying for a drought.”
The 52-year-old library has suffered some “pretty bad” leaks for awhile, though not onto the books, Meerians explained, and the funding finally came through.
Certified Construction Inc. has been hired for the $324,000 job and, according to Paul Mark of the state library staff, it will involve the reroofing plus removing an old, donated PV solar system. The branch last got a new roof in 1990.
The building, parking lot, drive-through, entrance book drop and Friends bookstore also will be closed. Meerians and the custodian be on duty to monitor construction, and staff will go to other branches.
