Reeling In Fish Auction Facts At Emmanuel Talk

Windward residents will have the chance to learn more about the Honolulu Fish Auction during the next topic in Emmanuel Episcopal Church’s speaker series of 2014-2015, set for 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the church on 780 Keolu Drive.

The lively early-morning auction in Honolulu harbor has distributed the island’s daily catch since 1952, and Brooks Takenaka knows it well. Takenaka is assistant general manager of United Fishing Agency, and he will answer questions and explain HFA’s procedures. He also will touch upon the sustainability of Hawaii’s fish population, how fresh “fresh” really is and the role of UFA. Listeners should come away from the free program knowing well the fish’s journey from ocean fleet to market to dinner plate or restaurant menu.

The fish auction is located on Pier 38, and public tours are available from the nonprofit Hawaii Seafood Council on Saturdays by reservation only. Visit hawaii-seafood.org.
