Recycling Bins Still On Campuses

Despite a cancelled contract with the city in June, Honolulu Disposal Service will continue to maintain its familiar white recycling bins at many schools and park sites across the island — although proceeds will no longer go to the host schools.

The increase in the number and use of the city’s blue curbside bins has drastically reduced the use of the community bins, according to city recycling coordinator Suzanne Jones. For now, however, East Oahu residents may still dispose of many items at bins on the following campuses: Aina Haina, Hahaione, Kahala and Kamiloiki elementary schools, Kaiser High and Kaimuki Middle schools, and Kapiolani Community College. These have been the most viable sites, HDS officials have stated, and will remain open as long as it can break even on costs.

The bins accept cardboard, paper, and clean aluminum, glass and plastic containers. For more information, go to opala.org, call 768-3200 or email info@opala.org.
