Record Store Day At Hungry Ear
Joining the sixth annual worldwide celebration of Record Store Day, Hungry Ear Records plans to offer deep discounts Saturday on used music inventory as well as release of hundreds of exclusive vinyl and compact disc titles.
“There’s a considerable audience still buying CDs and records,” said co-owner Dennie Chong, a Windward resident who started as an employee of the independent record store, which has been a haven for music fans at 418 Kuulei Road for 33 years.
“This broad demographic ranges from high school kids just discovering the magic of record albums to older music fans who have never stopped buying music in all its forms.”
Despite its size, the tiny Kailua shop stocks more than 500 titles on new vinyl, more than 3,000 new and used records, and 5,000 new and used CDs. Plus, Chong and partner Ward Yamashita buy records and CDs and seek out large collections to purchase.
“Indie” record stores like Hungry Ear are defined as physical retailers who sell at least 50 percent retail, are not publicly traded and are 70 percent locally owned.
