Raku Hoolauloa Will Fire Up At Mokuleia

The high point of Raku Hoolaulea 2013 is May 24-27 at Camp Mokuleia, where artists bring their premade ceramic pieces to be glazed and raku-fired in portable kilns.

The public is invited to visit and watch the firings all weekend and also participate in the community kiln, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Here individuals can buy and glaze a tea bowl created by a member of Hawaii Craftsmen. Pre-fired bowls and cups also will be available for sale.

A day pass costs $5 at the camp gate. Jurying of the artwork for the annual exhibition is set for May 27 on the beach.

Special guest artist and contemporary juror for the hoolaulea is Jerome Heck of Pupukea. Heck will share his textural methods and tool-making tonight (May 22) – in a slide lecture at 6 p.m. and wet clay demonstration at 7 p.m. – at UH Manoa Art Department.
