Providing Inspiration And Opportunities

By Robert N.E. Piper, executive director, Honolulu Community Action Program

“We would like to thank HCAP and Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center for the huge impact you have made in our lives. You have got us out of homelessness and into a life flowing with milk and honey. These programs are necessary to help get us out of lives of destruction, to give us a second chance at life. It is hard to express and put into words to express our gratitude. We are forever grateful. The program has given my husband and I so much hope for the future.” —Nancy, Kumuhonua resident

Nancy is just one of 20,000 individuals and families Honolulu Community Action Program Inc. (HCAP) served in 2014.

HCAP has been delivering need-based human services to the economically challenged on Oahu since 1965. We are committed to alleviating the conditions of poverty on the island through our mission of POI: Providing Opportunities and Inspiration to enable low-income individuals or families to achieve self-reliance.

HCAP provides a wide array of programs and services focused on the areas of early childhood, employment, education, economic development, emergency and transition programs, and community development and advocacy.

Our largest program, Head Start preschool, serves more than 1,659 children and their families each year. Many of our other programs and services are delivered through our five district service centers located across the island. HCAP operates Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center for adults who are homeless or at-risk for homelessness; the Ha Initiative is a creative STEM after-school program that offers children in grades 2 to 8 the opportunity to explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering and math; and Na Lima Hana-Employment Core Services program provides employment-preparation training, personalized case-management services and job-placement assistance.

In 2015, HCAP celebrates 50 years of providing opportunities and inspiration to the people we serve. We invite you to learn more about HCAP’s programs and services by visiting our website hcapweb.org, and connecting with us on Facebook and Twitter @HCAPhi.
