Hard Work By Kalāheo Students, Community Pays Off
“Whether it’s lashing or building the rock wall, every- one learned these traditional practices,” says Gumapac.
Even Marines from the nearby Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i participated in the build as well.
“Many of our students are military kids and one of the parents let the base know that they were welcome to join our community work days. The Marines were willing to learn about the culture and many of them came back to continue helping,” says Gumapac.
She adds, “And for the kanaka and local kids, many of them do not know many Hawaiian traditions due to generational trauma. I was the same way, too. And so it’s im- portant for them to learn. Now that there’s this resurgence of interest, many of them are starting to feel they have an identity.”
It’s her hope that the hale will be both a learning space and pu‘uhonua, or a safe space, where students can find sanctuary whenever they feel the need to step away from the busyness and noise of the school.
