Keiki Love The Rell Sunn Menehune Surf Contest
Though there wasn’t much surf, the kids made the most of it and got fully stoked. Just think — some of the keiki who surfed in the initial years of the competition are now over 50 years old.

The event supports the Rell Sunn Educational Fund. The legendary Queen of Mākaha, Rell Sunn may have passed away in 1998, but her legacy of uplifting the com- munity continues. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1983 but kept surfing and competing throughout her final years. Surf News Net- work was honored to have her on our team of reporters in the 1980s and 1990s.
