Proving that “50 is nifty,” Windward Community Col- lege has exciting events com- ing up this week to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

For starters, Out Loud! In the Library will be held 5–7 p.m. on March 29 at Hale La‘akea Library, third floor executive conference room. Refreshments will be served. This will be a free special event honoring the Kāne‘ohe school’s language arts faculty with readings from their pub- lished books.
Festival supporters include the Hawai‘i Music Institute at Windward CC, UH music faculty, and Kanile‘a ‘Uku- lele.
Kāneʻohe resident Robert Barclay will read from his novel Bastards in the Wilder- ness, and will present the three literary winners of Windward CC’s 2023 Pueo Literary and Arts Journal.
A second big event this week is Gallery ‘Iolani’s pre- sentation of its new exhibit —‘Ai Pōhaku, Stone Eaters — from March 31 through April 5. It will also include a free artists’ reception from 4 to 7 p.m. March 31, which is open to the public with music and refreshments. The exhibit is focused on intergeneration- al poets, painters, carvers, weavers, filmmakers, photog- raphers and musicians telling a story of Native Hawaiian contemporary art that began during the cultural reawaken- ing of the 1970s and continues to unfold.

Windward CC alums Lina Girl Langi and Davey D will emcee the concert.
Lastly, Mysterious Bene- factors: The Red Raven will take place at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. April 2 online or live at Palikū Theatre. It will be a live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons gaming fundraiser for students of the Hawai‘i Conservatory of Performing Arts.
Punalu‘u resident Desi Poteet will read from her fic- tion book The Grace of Dark Times. Poteet holds a mas- ter’s degree in English and creative writing and a Master of Fine Arts in professional screenwriting. As an assistant professor, she encourages her students to discover and hon- or their unique voices as sto- rytellers.
A third upcoming event is a day of free music expe- riences — such as creation, performance and education — as Windward CC hosts the second annual Kani Kūola: University of Hawai‘i Sys- tem Music Festival on April 1. The festival runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with a scholarship bene- fit concert at 6 p.m. at Palikū Theatre. Music workshops will be in-person in Hale ‘Ākoakoa with live streaming available.

Payne is a poet and translator who teaches Spanish at Wind- ward CC.
The collaborative work of Hawaiian artists, curators and educators will be on display at Gallery ‘Iolani and con- currently at six interrelated college and university venues on Oʻahu.
Highlights include a panel discussion on the music of the Hawaiian renaissance with Jon Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio, Liko Martin and Jerry Santos.
All proceeds from the con- cert will go to the Kanile‘a Hawaiian Music Scholarship, making it possible for Wind- ward CC students to learn and perpetuate Hawaiian music.
